Mariana

Date: 1892

Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1892. Inspired by Tennyson's poem 'Mariana':

"She only said, 'My life is dreary,
He cometh not,' she said;
She said, 'I am aweary, aweary,
I would that I were dead.'"
Tennyson's poem also inspired other painters to paint their own Marianas.

Reproduced in colour in 'Henrietta Rae (Mrs. Ernest Normand)' by Arthur Fish, Cassell and Company, 1905.
