Gustav Klimt

Austrian, 1862 - 1918

Schubert at the Piano

Date: 1899

This painting was destroyed in 1945. This, and many other important Klimt paintings, had been evacuated for safe keeping during World War II to the Schloss Immendorf in Austria. Retreating SS troops set fire to the castle to prevent it falling into enemy hands. It was the most significant artistic loss suffered by Austria in the Second World War. Also destroyed were Musik II and Medicine.
