Based upon the legend of Ceyx and Halycone, Draper shows Halycone seeking Ceyx whom she lost in a shipwreck. The birds above her head are halycons, fabled birds, identified with the kingfisher, that was supposed to have had the power to calm the wind and the waves while it nested on the sea during the winter solstice.
