Dante Gabriel Rossetti

British, 1828 - 1882

Sibylla Palmifera

Date: 1866-70

The model for this painting was Alexa Wilding. It portrays the 'Soul's Beauty', the title given by Rossetti to the sonnet he wrote to accompany it. Around the Lady Beauty flit butterflies, emblematic of the soul; she holds the palm of victory in her right hand. As a companion piece, Rossetti painted Lady Lilith, portraying the 'Body's Beauty' in the person of the sensual demon who, in Jewish legend, was Adam's first wife.
