Constance

Date: 1896

Based on Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales, The Man of Law's Tale'. Constance, daughter of the emperor of Rome and wife of the king of Northumberland, was treacherously cast adrift with her infant son in a ship without sail or rudder, but was miraculously safeguarded and after five years on the sea reached Rome.

Ryder wrote in a private letter in 1896:I have finished … Constance.
