Ill Omen

Date: 1893

The full title of this painting is 'Ill Omen: Girl in the East Wind with Ravens Crossing the Moon'. It can be read as a play on words: 'Ill - Oh Men!'. It shows a noble but unhappy woman suffering the chill winds of misfortune in life and love. Black birds cross the moon - the image of what would be the fulfilment of this woman's life. It can be contrasted with Margaret Macdonald's Summer of the same year.
