BIOGRAPHY

Landscape and genre painter. Born in Manchester on 19th October 1832. Studied at Paris under Ary Scheffer in 1853, and was closely associated with Whistler, Poynter and Du Maurier. Lived in Algiers from 1858-59 and worked in Düsseldorf with Du Maurier in 1860. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1865 and also at the Grosvenor Gallery. Director of the Department of Science and Art, South Kensington, between 1881-98. Lived abroad for many years, especially on the Riviera. At home his abode was at Abbots Langley in Hertfordshire. He died in April 1911.
