BIOGRAPHY
Painter and illustrator. Studied at the Royal Academy schools. Began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1884, also at the Society of British Artists and elsewhere. Titles at the RA were mostly portraits, also allegorical figures in late Pre-Raphaelite style, e.g. 'An Idyll', 'The Mermaid', 'The Judgement of Paris' etc. He was also a prolific illustrator, best known for his illustrations of the novels of Rider Haggard. He also worked for such magazines as The Lady's Pictorial and The Daily Chronicle. After about 1900 he turned increasingly to portrait painting. In 1906 he taught at the Arts School in Glasgow. Between 1901 and 1912 he exhibited at many of the big international exhibitions, e.g. in Munich, Venice, Pittsburgh.
Greiffenhagen had a relationship with the Scottish novelist Catherine Carswell in the early 1900s.
The Tate Gallery, London owns three of Greiffenhagen's works.
Greiffenhagen's work can also be viewed in St John's Chapel at the Parish Church of Saint Jude-on-the-Hill, Hampstead, London. He provided a panel depicting St John for the altar.
