BIOGRAPHY

Painter of portraits and landscapes. Born in Manchester on 16th November 1843, née Goode. Married Frank Romer at the age of 17 and went with him to Paris where she studied art under M. Charles Chaplin. Her husband died in 1873, and she married the artist Joseph Middleton Jopling (1831-1884) in 1874. Following his death, she married George W. Rowe, a lawyer. She exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1870 and at the Paris Salon, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. She became the first lady member of the latter institution. She died on 19th November 1933.

Sir John Everett Millais painted a striking portrait of Mrs. Jopling which was included in the 2007 Millais retrospective.
