BIOGRAPHY

Painted portraits, genre and historical subjects in oil and watercolour. Born at Waal, Bavaria. Settled in Southampton in 1857. Studied art at the Royal College of Art under Sir Luke Fildes in 1866. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1869, also at Suffolk Street, and the Grosvenor Gallery. Elected R.I. 1871, A.R.A. 1879, R.E. 1880, R.A. 1890, A.R.W.S. 1893, R.W.S. 1894 and V.P.R.W.S. 1896-97. Founded and directed the School of Art at Bushy between 1883-1904, and was Slade Professor of Fine Art, Oxford from 1885 to 1894. Knighted in 1907. Represented in several public collections.
