BIOGRAPHY

Painter in oil and watercolour of genre, portraits and landscapes. Fourth son of the landscape painter Charles Swinstead, and brother of the artists Alfred Hillyard Swinstead and Frank Hillyard Swinstead. Studied art at the RA Schools in 1881. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1882 and elected R.I. in 1907. After painting portraits and genre for many years he turned increasingly to landscapes and coastal scenes. Lived in London and died on 16th January 1926.
