BIOGRAPHY

Studied art with Alfred Miller in hometown of Baltimore, and subsequently with Gleyre and Brion in Paris, where he resided from 1864 - 1870. Worked as portraitist and history and genre painter. In his own day best known for colonial subjects; his pictures of the Plains Indians are best remembered today. Visited Minnesota in 1851; sketched Indians, and ultimately completed murals for State Capitol in St. Paul. He was based for most of his career in the Baltimore-Annapolis area.
