BIOGRAPHY

Painter in oil and watercolour of figure subjects; sculptor, wood-engraver and writer on art. Born in Geneva on 2nd October 1866 of an English father and French mother. Spent his childhood in France and Italy. Came to England and studied at Lambeth School of Art from 1882 where he became friendly with Charles Shannon. Together they edited The Dial 1889-97 and founded the Vale Press 1896-1904. Turned to painting and sculpture, and exhibited with the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers from 1906, later becoming a member. Elected ARA 1922 and RA 1928. Represented in several public collections. Lived in London where he died on 7th October 1931.
