BIOGRAPHY

Self-taught American artist. Rejected by the National Academy of Design at twenty, he trained with a minor artist, William Edgar Marshall, and was then admitted. Travelled in Europe in 1877, 1882, 1887 and 1896. A visionary painter, he chose subjects from Shakespeare, Byron, Poe and Wagner. He painted some 170 pictures, many of small dimensions, and is considered one of the pioneering figures in American art.

Sadly, much of Ryder's work has not survived because the unstable and unconventional materials he frequently employed deteriorated.
