Andromeda by Leighton

MESSAGE:

Did you notice than the poor dragon actually protects Andromeda from Perseus? The arrow may hurt her symbolising the lost of the virginity or extasy ( like the one of st Therese). Or, the dragon's neck means the fallus so they both - dragon and the hero fight for the virgin... Not to eat her, not in the least...
REPLIES:
Fascinating composition --- If the dragon is the Fire of Life - expressed in this realm as sexuality or  the seeking of physical unity than the dragon tries to keep her unaware of the higher or spiritual unity which Perseus represents. Only Perseus can free Andromeda as he looked through the delusions of this world by beheading Medusa. In this way it is perhaps like in St. Georges myth a freeing of the soul by the solar fire which alone can overcome the fire of pure instinct. Beautifully painted by Perseus emerging as if flying out of the sun... Thanks for pointing this picture out and for your insight... I will look into St. Therese.
