THE EDWARDIANS: SECRETS AND DESIRES

The Edwardians exhibition features 140 paintings, sculptures, paintings and designs drawn from international and national collections. It showcases works by some of the most famous European artists of the early 1900s including Whistler and Sargent, alongside works by the Australians they influenced such as E. Phillips Fox, Hugh Ramsay, Charles Conder and Rupert Bunny. "The exhibition contains many sumptuous images which are a sheer joy to look at" says Dr Anna Gray, Assistant Director of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia and curator of the exhibition; "but [the works] also tell a story about social reform and changes in artistic exploration". Subjects range from the opulent and glamorous lives of the aristocracy to the pursuit of leisure by the lower classes and the emancipation of women."We are delighted to be working with the National Gallery of Australia to present this splendid exhibition" says Ron Radford, Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia. "The Edwardians: Secrets & Desires is the perfect sequel to our own highly successful 2001 / 2002 exhibition, Love and Death: Art in the Age of Queen Victoria and we know Adelaide audiences will enjoy discovering these magnificent paintings of the Edwardian years as much as those of the Victorian era" he says."
