OF QUEENS' GARDENS: THE MYTH OF FLORENCE IN THE PRE-RAPHAELITE MILIEU AND IN AMERIAN CULTURE (19TH-20TH CENTURIES)

A recently launched exhibition in the west wing of the Uffizi Gallery explores the myth of Florence in the Pre-Raphaelite environment and in American culture between the 19th and early 20th centuries. According to some estimates, in the second half of the 18th Century almost one third of the population in Florence was composed of foreign (mostly British) visitors and residents. The city, who was almost dismissed as uninteresting by 17th Century travelers (Goethe stayed only three hours on his first visit in Forence), was rediscovered and made world famous by artists such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning, George Eliot, John Ruskin, Vernon Lee, Charles Fairfax Murray, Henry James and Edith Wharton to name but a few. They fostered the literary and artistic myth and the tourist stereotype of Florence as we know it to this day.
