HIDDEN BURNE-JONES

Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery has the largest and most representative catalogue of works by the major nineteenth-century artist Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), who was born and grew up in Birmingham.

This collection is in every sense an international public resource, with 1183 works, 1137 of which are works on paper and related archive material. Its unique range and depth has provided the theme for this exhibition which considers the development and major themes of Burne-Jones’ artistic vision through his life-long commitment to drawing.

The project is the result of a three-year research project to catalogue the complete Burne-Jones collection of drawings, watercolours, prints and archive material at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, led by Elisa Korb, a postgraduate doctoral student at the University of Birmingham. She has worked with Tessa Sidey, Curator of Prints and Drawings at Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, to select the exhibition. The intention has been to expose and contextualise the less familiar aspects of this unique collection and, as a result, a substantial number of the sixty-two selected works are being publicly exhibited for the first time.
