THE LEGACY OF HOMER: FOUR CENTURIES OF ART FROM THE ECOLE NATIONALE SUPÉRIEURE DES BEAUX-ARTS, PARIS

The Dahesh Museum of Art and Princeton University Art Museum are partnering to bring to the U.S. the unprecedented exhibition The Legacy of Homer: Four Centuries of Art from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. To be presented first at the Ecole in autumn 2004, some 123 objects will then be divided between Princeton (mostly pre-1800 artworks) and the Dahesh (mostly post-1800). Organized by Ecole curator Dr. Emmanuel Schwartz, the exhibition explores the impact of the renowned poet Homer upon the finest visual artists of 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century France by examining the Ecole's superb, yet little-known, collection of paintings and sculptures. France's leading art school was once widely known to possess a collection as fine as the Louvre's. The names in the checklist suggest their astonishing quality—David, Ingres, David d'Angers, Rude, Flandrin, Regnault, and Carpeaux, to name a few.
