The Flower of Forgetfulness

Prior to WWI, the poppy was celebrated for its ability to make one forget, either by inducing sleep or inducing a state of 'comfortable numbness'. After WWI, the poppy became the symbol of remembrance.

Ophelia

Ophelia
Forgotten? No, we never do forget:
We let the years go; wash them clean with tears,
Leave them to bleach out in the open day,
Or lock them careful by, like dead friends' clothes,
Till we shall dare unfold them without pain,--
But we forget not, never can forget.

The Message
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

A Field of Poppies

Sleep and his Half-brother Death
For death like a breath,
Comes to all soon or late
And mortals are the sport
Of a mischievous fate.
So welcome the peace
That we bring to mankind
It is happiness to dream on,
With every care left behind.

...... and soon they found themselves in the midst of a great meadow of poppies.
Now it is well known that
when there are many of these flowers together
their odor is so powerful that anyone
who breathes it falls asleep,
and if the sleeper is not carried away
from the scent of the flowers,
he sleeps on and on forever.

8/9/2004 3:48:26 PM Ca ne fait rien Ah the poppy, most enigmatic of flowers. They grow wild and abundant in the most barren of soils, yet pick them and they die; they are the toughest and mist fragile of things. To me ,a field of poppies amongst the corn is the most wonderful sight on earth. Sometimes, Stargazer, I wonder if we were born under the same star, I like your albums so much.
8/9/2004 11:07:14 PM Erum i agree with stef'an'guy really beautiful stargazer.
8/10/2004 4:20:31 AM stargazer Having grown both California and Oriental poppies, I find I like the California variety better...alas they are also the more difficult of the two to grow. I do agree, Stef, a field of poppies is a treat for the eyes. Under the same star? Nice to think so. Thank you, Erum, I'm always pleased to hear you've enjoyed my albums....~*~

11/16/2004 6:13:09 AM On a Quest This is a gorgeous album! I wasn't aware of the fact that poppies were a symbol of forgetfulless. Very interesting. I love poppies - whenever I drive past them with my family I ask to stop and go see them closer. :)
4/7/2005 9:10:23 AM raven's claws Very nice album. I wasnt aware of poppies standing for forgetfulness though. Ive always loved poppies thats a flower that definetly stands out in my mind. When I was a child we would go to the country side, there was this field full of poppies both white and red ones. I havent seen a field of poppies ever since

5/1/2009 2:54:35 PM nicoledesapio_nbdrt Terrific idea. Waterhouse's 1894 OPHELIA would also fit here, but I'm glad you included the "blue" one...Of course, the most famous poppies in art are probably the ones in Monet's (?) painting of the lady and child walking through the poppy field.
1/11/2010 12:09:35 AM Awake I agree Nicole ... I adore that painting by Monet, titled 'Poppies Blooming' ... and yes, it is Monet. Lovely album did not know this history and symbolism of the poppy .... one of my favorite flowers ... thanks for enlightening. : )
10/1/2010 10:31:54 AM nicoledesapio_nbdrt A well thought-out album with wonderful images, especially the Rossetti and the Waterhouses.
