I saw red

One of the most ancient dye stuffs on record is kermes, a scarlet dye used in coloring linens and wool. It was derived from little scale insects which infest an oak abundant in the mountainous regions of southern Europe and the near East. The insects were gathered, killed by the exposure to the vapor of hot vinegar, and dried.~~~ Red was the most stable of colors but extremely expensive. Scarlet was the most sought after and carried special distinction. Red was soon the color that represented kings, chieftains, and dignitaries.

1/14/2004 6:42:26 PM chiaroscuro Phoebe Ann Traquair's An Angel is one of the most striking and memorable that I've come across. Glad to see you put it into an album. Now I'll remember the painter's name. C.
1/14/2004 7:01:38 PM chiaroscuro The second article you referred to - I would say is a good starting point (maybe) for beginners in the study of gemstones - as well as a continuation of the making of color pigment. I think when push comes to shove, an artist will use anything, create any means, if immersed in a work. Although not directly related, consider the innovations of Goya. C.
1/14/2004 7:03:50 PM chiaroscuro Is that Angel playing an imaginary instrument? The painting is so adorable.
1/14/2004 7:08:25 PM stargazer Not your run of the mill angel, is it? I'd like to see more of Phoebe Ann's work...~*~
1/14/2004 7:16:35 PM stargazer I found several interesting sites on dyes and pigments..fascinating reading. If angel is playing an imaginary instrument it's probably the ever present heralding trumpet...I prefer to imagine him/her playing the Ulian pipes...~*~
